Why do we need art?
Welcome to an interactive lecture on art based on the artwork by Samuel Bak
Samuel Bak
Samuel Bak was born in 1933 in Vilnius. As a child, he survived the Holocaust and today is a world-famous artist of Litvak origin. The object of his creative endeavours is humanity, its past and fallacies, expressed in the post-modernist style of allegorical realism.
The breaking of the integrity of traditional genres, metaphors, and strong symbols allow Samuel Bak’s works to be successfully used as a medium for art in general. Therefore, in search of answers to the question: ‘Why do we need art?’, we will review the artist's works through the prism of nine characteristic symbols.

Here, as in the art world, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Choose the topics you care about and click on the interpretations of the meanings of the symbols of Samuel Bak that are closest to your heart. The nine symbols represented in each theme will help you find the artist’s painting that may appear to be close to your heart! And most importantly, you will be able to see the painting live by visiting the Samuel Bak Museum in Vilnius.
